For over 50 years, the magic of Jazz has operated in San Sebastián. Magic of the Plaza de la Trinidad, hidden behind the Basilica Santa Maria at the end of the old quarter, where the musicians love to play at night, in the intimacy and complicity of a naturally supportive public. I remember Youn Sun Nah, a celestial voice on a summer evening, so strange and so close, Mélodie Gardot, inspired by the mysteries of the place, Metheny & Mehldau setting the stage on fire in a memorable acoustic concert.
Magical Kursaal, a modern ship stranded on the beach, where in a more comfortable but also festive setting, I attended with emotion one of the last concerts of Hank Jones, and with delight at one of the first concerts of Jessie Norman's Jazz. I also remember a breathtaking Keith Jarett.
Magic also from the Victoria Eugenia Theater, this century-old room recently renovated, a setting that suited so well with the delicate accents of Stacey Kent ...
This year again I will return to the « Plaza de la Trinidad », and discover Cecil Mc Lorin-Salvant, a new, seductive, inventive, different voice; I will also go to the Victoria Eugenia Theater to meet with the eternal youth of Michel Portal, his inventions, his eclecticism, his evidences.
Jazzaldia forever ....
